Plot Notes:
  • A lot of exposition is ripped out and placed later on, for example: Who Darnay is, Why Manette was in the Bastille.

    • What does he gain? He gains subplots reaching climax at the same time, because he wrote the book in installments he was able to maintain suspense.
    • Secrecy is a motif and is a method used by Dickens.
    • Reciprocity, Opposites in terms of characters and plot. He doubles in the plot by resolutions vs. conflicts, and switching between classes. Golden Thread vs. Yarn
    • There are facts that could flip you, and change your direction, you can be recalled.
    • How does he arrange plot events? Mirrors plot events (Court scenes, Manette and Darnay).
  • Elongation/ Compression of time, Pace
    • Swiftness of French plot/ Quick to act, Lack of Thinking vs.  Longer, Slower, Wordier, Lack of Action pace of England plot, like Trial at Old Bailey.
    • Perversion of time- how quickly things can change.
    • Flipping time, so readers are on their toes
    • Now vs. Past, First plot point- release from the past, recalled to life. Past is more important, you can be re-birthed. He shows this through plot, puts Manette's going to jail in the middle and we open with hope.
    • Every character has a haunting past. No characters are perfectly innocent, besides Lucie. Defarge lost everyone to Evremondes, she is a vengeful force.
    • Lucie is the golden thread who weaves all the plot together. Thread pulls people out, recalls to life.
    • People can flip from Earth to Heaven
  • Narrators Flip
